Baby Bump Project now on Facebook!

Well, the day has finally come. The Baby Bump Project has finally joined Facebook.

If you are on FB (and who isn't these days), become a fan of the BBP has enjoy another space where you can share ideas, post photos, videos or whatever content you think is relevant to other readers like you.

I'm especially interested in having an interactive space where you can more easily speak to each other and also pass on ideas for posts or ask questions. I often would like to respond to comments on the blog but Blogger makes it a bit difficult. Facebook is clearly the solution.

Anyway, join up and leave a message, or a proud photo of you, your baby bump, your post-baby body and anything in between.

Facebook breastfeeding ban here to stay

It looks as though Facebook isn't giving in to the pleas by thousands of FB mums who have been protesting the discriminatory policies of the social networking site in the deletion and censorship of their photographs of breastfeeding. The exposure of nipple is the reason for the deletions.

The New York Times reports Barry Schnitt, a spokesman for the company, said that banning nudity was a clear and consistent line to draw. “We think it’s a consistent policy,” said Mr. Schnitt. “Certainly we can agree that there is context where nudity is not obscene, but we are reviewing thousands of complaints a day. Whether it’s obscene, art or a natural act — we’d rather just leave it at nudity and draw the line there.”

Hey Facebook breastfeeding is NOT obscene

For those of you rockin' mums who not only breastfeed but who also happen to have a profile on Facebook you are probably abreast (pun intended) of the current status of breastfeeding photos on the networking site: they are not allowed, considered 'obscene' and pornographic. Images of areolas apparently are too racy for the standards of the website and so they have systematically deleted photos of women breastfeeding and in some cases has deleted accounts altogether. Considering users continue to post photos of themselves in various states of undress, many of which are not deleted, the idea that breastfeeding is pornographic is so antiquated it feels like this argument is so five years ago. If Angelina Jolie can appear on the cover of a magazine with her boobs out and everyone thinks it's beautiful, why on earth would it be inappropriate for everyday mums to celebrate their powers of lactation??

What can you do?

1) Join the FB group 'Hey Facebook, breastfeeding is not obscene' (65,000 mums have already joined)

2) Participate in a virtual nurse-in hosted by posting a photo of yourself or any woman lactating to remind Facebook administrators that breastfeeding is legal and appropriate in public and should also be allowed on the website.
